FinOps that does not slow delivery down

Cloud cost programmes usually fail by making engineers ask permission. Attribution and defaults work better than approval gates.

The instinct when the cloud bill grows is to add approvals. It reliably reduces spend and it reliably reduces shipping, because every environment now costs a conversation.

Attribution first

Engineers make sensible trade-offs when they can see the cost of their own service. Enforce tagging at provision time, break the bill down per team and per service, and publish it where the teams already look.

Make the cheap path the default path

  • Right-sized instance classes baked into the platform modules, not chosen per project.
  • Non-production environments that sleep outside working hours automatically.
  • Storage lifecycle rules applied by default, with an explicit opt-out.
  • Commitment coverage managed centrally, so teams never have to reason about it.
A guardrail that runs in the pipeline costs nothing. A guardrail that runs in a meeting costs a week.

Handled this way, cost becomes a property of the platform rather than a monthly negotiation, and delivery speed is unaffected.
